I have this weird view that the world is less forgiving than in past times (say the 1990s).

  1. The memory of mistakes don't decay as fast.
  2. Higher global moral awareness comes with a lower threshold for error as people expect more.
  3. The court of public opinion is decentralized and chaotic. The self is constantly projected.
  4. Incentives for forgiveness are less.
  5. Competition is higher as we have reached information equality.
  6. Social forgiveness mechanisms are no longer relationship-based, but rather now algorithmic-based, and in totality lead to causation of cancel culture/increased polarization.
